David Luiz Apologises For Man City Horror Show

David Luiz has apologised for his horror show in Arsenal’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.

The Brazilian international, who is out of contract at the end of this month, was only brought on as a substitute for the injured Pablo Mari after 24 minutes but he was at fault for Manchester City’s opening goal just before half-time.

Luiz’s day went from bad to worse just four minutes after the break when he conceded a penalty for pulling back Riyad Mahrez and was shown a red card.

The 33-year-old thus became the first player to commit an error leading to an opposition goal, concede a penalty and get red carded in the same Premier League game since Carl Jenkinson for West Ham United against Bournemouth in 2015.

"It's not the team's fault, it was my fault," a somber-looking Luiz told Sky Sports after the game.

"Today I think the team did well, especially with 10 men, the coach is amazing, the players did amazing, it's just my fault.

"I took the decision to play, I should have taken another decision in the last two months, but I didn't. It was all about my contract, whether I stay or not. I have 14 days to be here, and that's it. Today was my fault.

"I don't want to use it as an alibi or an excuse, but it's my fault and that's it.

"I love to be here, that's why I continue to train hard, that's why I came here today, that's why I've tried to do everything, that's why I'm here putting my face up, that's why I said to the players no one had to speak, I'm happy to show my face and be here.

"I want to stay, the coach knows, he wants me to stay, and we are just waiting for the decisions."

The former Paris Saint Germain defender’s latest appearance was his 33rd in his debut campaign in North London after joining from Chelsea for £8m last summer.
